Long Line - Brasseur, Brashear, Brashears - From France to Texas, USA

Benoit Brasseur, also known as Benoir, Benjamin or Bennett and Brashear or Brashears, instead of Brasseur, is an ancestor of mine with a well documented line of descendants.  He is my 10th great grandfather and was born in France about 1620.

There are many versions of the early history of this family, but most agree that he was French Huguenot and came to Virginia about 1637, probably with his father and siblings.

Benoit married a young woman named Mary before 1640 here in the New World.  Her maiden name is not known.  Benoit and Mary had 8 children, including Robert Brashears, born about 1648 in Nansemond, VA.  About 1658, Benoit and Mary moved to Maryland (MD).  It is believed that there had been some religious tension between the Anglicans and Catholics of Virginia and the French Huguenots - Protestants.  In MD, Lord Baltimore gave land to Benoit and his adult children.   He also purchased about an 1150 acre plantation on "the Cliffs" of the Chesapeake Bay.

On December 4, 1662, Benoit became a Denizen (citizen) along with his entire family, changing his name to the Anglicized Benjamin Brashear.  He died shortly after that on May 25, 1663 in Chesapeake Beach, Calvert Co., MD.  His wife was very wise and protected the lands that Benjamin had owned for her children, even though she remarried.

Robert Brashears, mentioned above, born about 1646 in Nansemond Co., Virginia married, but the name of his wife is unknown. He died in 1712 in Prince George's Co., MD.

Robert had a son, Samuel Brashears, born in 1673 in Calvert Co., Maryland.  In 1693, he married Ann Jones, born about 1675 in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland.  Samuel died June 1, 1740 in Prince George's Co., MD.  I have not found information about when Ann died.

Samuel and Ann had a son Robert Brashears, born February 19, 1705 in Prince George's Co., MD.  He married Charity Dowell on February 2, 1727/28 in Anne Arundel Co., MD.  Charity was born April 4, 1711  in Calvert Co., MD.  Samuel died February 2, 1782 in Guilford Co., NC.  Charity died 1787 in Guilford Co., NC.

Robert and Charity had a son named Robert Samuel Brashears, born August 20, 1731 in Prince George's Co., MD.  About 1754, Robert Samuel married Phoebe Nicks, born June 8, 1738 in Talbot, MD.  Robert Samuel died January 5, 1816 in Roane Co., TN.  Phoebe died in 1881 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC.

Isaac and Elizabeth had son, Robert Brashears, born Jan 5, 1787 in TN.  On November 19, 1808, Robert married Sarah Rhea Hankins, born February 1, 1788 in TN.  Robert died August 25, 1852 in Lawrence Co., TN.  Sarah died October 9, 1876 in Lawrence Co., TN.

Robert and Sarah had a daughter, Annie Brashears, born May 27, 1818 in TN.  On February 20, 1833, Annie married Jonas Springer, born Jan 1, 1810 in Lawrence Co., TN.  Annie died March 7, 1883 and Jonas died November 27, 1889, both in Lawrence Co., TN.

Annie and Jonas had a son, Robert Springer, born July 3, 1842 in Lawrence Co., TN.   On January 5, 1860, Robert married Elizabeth Jane Kelly, born August 5, 1845, also in Lawrence Co., TN.  Robert served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War.  He died July 31, 1929 and Elizabeth Jane died April 14, 1915, both in Midlothian, Ellis Co., TX.

Robert and Elizabeth Jane had a son, George Andrew Springer, born July 17, 1864 in Lawrence Co., TN.  On December 22, 1886, George Andrew married Lizzie Louella Busby, born February 25, 1866 in Lawrence Co., TN.  George Andrew died May 27, 1919 in Midlothian, Ellis Co., TX.  Ella died June 28, 1943 in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX.
