Misfortune - The Story of Henry Grady Ramer

The theme that Amy gave us this week was "Sports", and I have nothing to write about concerning sports. So, I am going to go back to a topic from March, before I started blogging, and that is "Misfortune".  There have been several misfortunate events in the lives of my family members, but this one I will share today.

Henry "Grady" Ramer was born April 3, 1912 in Mountain Peak, Ellis County, Texas to John "Henry" and Jennie (Ferguson) Ramer.  Grady was my grandmother's (Minnie) younger brother.

Grady was baptized at the Mountain Peak Church on May 26, 1912.

It looks like maybe Grady was self conscious about his toes!

Grady and Lena Springer, his sister Minnie's sister-in-law
(Aubrey Springer's sister). Both families were always close.
In the 1920 census, Grady is listed as age 7 and in school.

Grady was a good student and apparently popular at school, too (See the student resolution below).
He was also active in church.

Grady also played the ukelele and the violin.

about playing the "uke" and violin lesson.

Grady's best friend was Lauris Bennett. They apparently had a great time with each other!

At the tender age of 14, Grady was tragically killed when he was trying to get on a seed truck that usually took him to school each day.
Newspaper Obituary
Grady's last portrait
Grady's fellow ninth grade students created a Resolution sent to the newspaper and his parents telling how much they loved and will miss Grady.

Grady's Memorial Card is below.
Grady was laid to rest in Midlothian Cemetery, Midlothian, Ellis County, Texas on Friday, October 29, 1926 in a new family plot where eventually his parents and two of his sisters and their husbands would be buried.
On November 5th, Henry Ramer, Grady's father, finalized the purchase of three burial lots and in 1930 he added three more.

It seems that misfortune comes into most families in some form or another.  I am glad that Grady's mother kept some of Grady's belongings for us to know more about him these many years later.

'Til Next Time!
