Out of Place - Margaret Rebecca (McLean) Busby

This week, the challenge is to write about the topic, "Out Of Place".  Margaret Rebecca (McLean) Busby is my 3rd great grandmother.  And when she died, she was "out of place". or so I thought for many years!

Margaret Rebecca McLean was born February 17, 1820 in Kentucky according to her memorial on FindaGrave and her gravestone.

Another source says she was born February 12, 1820 and I have not been able to confirm either with additional documentation.

Margaret was the 8th child of Samuel M. and Elizabeth South (Irvine) McLean. According to the 1820 Federal Census, Samuel and his family were living in Lewisburg, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky when Margaret was born.

By the 1830 census, they were living in Lawrence County, Tennessee, where most of the family lived the rest of their lives.

On December 18, 1839, Margaret married Stephanes Busby in Lawrence County, Tennessee.

The above document is difficult to read but it states: "Dec. 18th S. Busby and M. R. McLean - Marriage License Solemnized by Joseph Miller, M. G. (Minister of the Gospel)."

Margaret and Stephanes had 9 children: James Jones Busby, an Infant Son, Samuel Sebastian Busby, John Stephen Busby (my 2nd great grandfather), Messaniah Elizabeth Busby, William Franklin Busby, Thomas Reece Busby, Charles Lindsey Busby (Sr), and Margaret Augusta Busby Fowlkes McGee.

Stephanes died March 13, 1875 and is buried in the McLean Family Cemetery, Lawrence County, Tennessee.

In the 1880 census, Margaret was still living in Lawrence County with three of her youngest four children.

Since I was unable to find Margaret in the 1900 census in Lawrence County, Tennessee for a long time, I assumed she died between 1880 and 1900, probably in Lawrence County.  But, sometime between 1890 and 1900 it appears that Margaret and the three younger children moved to Greer County, Oklahoma.  And this is where Margaret died on October 5, 1896.  She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma.

So, the reason that I feel Margaret was "out of place" is because for a very long time, I only knew about the family living in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and my great, great grandfather, John Stephen Busby moving to Texas.  I had no idea about the part of the family that moved to Oklahoma and New Mexico!  I never expected to find her there!

'Til Next Time!
