Dear Diary - A Note from My Mother

"Dear Diary" is the theme that Amy gave us for last week's blog post. My mother kept a Diary for quite a while.  There is a 5-Year Diary and some little note books with entries. It is always fun to read what she was thinking through the years of her life.

In the back of the 5-Year Diary, I found a piece of paper with a hand written note that I will share today.
To “Mother and Daddy Springer”
A letter found in the back of the Diary

Dear Mother and Daddy,
As your dear son and my dear husband is gone and all that I have left is my children, will you always let me call you mother.  Because Delton loved you so much I want to try to take his place in your heart.  I want to think that when I need to go to some one besides my own mother and father that I will always have both of you.  I want to always be considered one of your family if that is not asking too much.  I have always loved being with you and I will always want to know that I will be welcome.
The one that we loved so much is gone and there is none that can ever take his place, no matter what happens.  He is the only boy that I ever loved and I think now that he is the only one that I will ever love.  If I should ever love anyone again, it will not be the same kind of love that I had for Delton.
This note is very touching and I am so glad I found it.  I am not sure if she ever gave it to my grandmother, but to read her thoughts after the death of my dad is very moving.

My dad was killed in an accident in 1982. You can read more here, https://regnirpsstories.blogspot.com/2018/09/closest-birthday.html, if you like.  He was very close to his parents.  My family lived less than a mile from them most of my life.   After my grandfather had died in 1972, my dad, since we lived the closest, took care of my grandmother.  In fact, it was just a few days before he was killed that he had moved her into a senior care facility so she would no longer have to live alone and do everything for herself.

So, my mother and grandmother had lost a significant person in their lives very suddenly and tragically.  But, the note confuses me.  Mother addresses the note to "Mother and Daddy Springer", but Minnie was the only one living at the time.  She also mentions her parents, as if they were still living, but her mother had died in 1958 and her father in 1970.  So, she had not been able to go to them for many years.

I did not find this note until after my mother's death, so I cannot ask her for answers to my confusion.  But, even though confusing, I am very glad to have this note that peeks into my mother's heart at a very difficult time in her life.

'Til Next Time!
