Namesake - "Prue" Shared by Three Genreations of Women

Several weeks ago, I skipped a post which was "Namesake".  I had previously done a post about "Same Name" about my own name and you can read that here:
https://regnirpsstories.blogspot.com/2018/06/same-name.html.  I was named for Modena Prue Springer, my aunt, but Modena was also a Namesake.  Modena's middle name, Prue, was from her aunt, Johnnie Prue Ramer, my grandmother Minnie's sister.  AND, Johnnie Prue was also named after Maggie Prue Winn, the wife of Minnie's uncle, Rev. Dr. Emmet Reeder Ramer.

Johnnie Prue Ramer was born June 17, 1908 in Mountain Peak, Ellis County, Texas.

Original document from Johnnie Prue's
Papers. Currently in the possession of author.

Her parents were John "Henry" and Nancy Jane "Jennie" Ferguson Ramer, who were married Dec 19, 1891 in Ramer, McNairy County, Tennessee.  You can read more about this event and this family in my previous blog,
https://regnirpsstories.blogspot.com/2018/12/next-to-last-margaret-ann-hill-ferguson.html.

Johnnie Prue was the 5th of 6 children and the 4th daughter.  Her older siblings were:
  • James "Ernest" Ramer, Oct 3, 1894 - Feb 12, 1976
  • "Minnie" May Ramer Springer (my grandmother), Mar 5, 1896 - Jan 23, 1988
  • "Lula" Lee Ramer Shockley Irwin, Jan 21, 1900 - Feb 22, 1976
  • Sadie "Bernice" Ramer Pillow Wright, Nov 4, 1902 - Oct 9, 1983

Henry's family is listed in the 1910 census, Johnnie Prue is the youngest, age 1.

When Johnnie Prue was very young, her aunt Rosa Ramer, Henry's sister, her husband, John Thomas Hamm, and their family moved to Texas for a short time.  I believe that she had some lung problems and were advised to move west.  But, I assume it did not help because they moved back to Ramer, Tennessee where they lived out their lives.  But, while they were here in Texas, Sadie and Johnnie Prue, who were pretty close to the same age, began a lifelong "friendship" and were very close cousins! Here they are together!

The last child, Johnnie Prue's little brother, was Henry "Grady" Ramer, Apr 3, 1912 - Oct 28, 1926.  Here is Henry, Jennie and their family in the 1920 census, again in Ellis County, Texas.  Ernest was already on his own, Minnie and Lula were already married, so the youngest 3 are listed.

Just a few months after Johnnie Prue was born, her uncle Emmet Reeder Ramer married Maggie Prue Winn on Sep 8, 1908 in Ellis County.  I am sure that they had been courting for some time, because Johnnie Prue was named for her.  She must have made a huge impression on Emmet's family!

From the photo of Maggie Prue, she appears to be a very elegant lady.  She was the wife of a prominent Cumberland Presbyterian evangelist, singer and pastor.  She had 2 children and died of Tuberculosis at the age of 33 on Jul 8, 1916 in El Paso, Texas.

Like Maggie Prue, Johnnie Prue was also a very elegant lady.  She was a business woman in Dallas, Texas, after which she lived the remainder of her life in Waxahachie, Texas.

Johnnie Prue and Clytie never had children, but were very close to their siblings, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and their extended family.  We were privileged to work at a chuch near Johnnie Prue during the last years of her life and it was always a delight to spend time with her.  Clytie passed away on Nov 21, 1981 and Johnnie Prue passed away on Jan 2, 1999.
