Favorite Discoveries - Cousins

One of my favorite discoveries in my genealogical research has been the cousins I find and connect with.  It is always very rewarding to be able to visit with someone to whom I am related and share photos, stories and discoveries.  I have been privileged to do that many times.

One example is a connection I made a couple of years ago with my half 2nd cousin, once removed, Gayle.  We connected on Ancestry and shared photos, stories, family trees and family information.  Gayle's great grandfather is my great, great grandfather!

I am descended from John Stephen Busby and his 1st wife, Margaret Evalena Carrell, and Gayle is descended from John Stephen Busby and his second wife, Frances "Fannie" Romelia Wooten!  My great grandmother, Ella, was about 30 years older than her sister, Floy, who is Gayle's grandmother!  That is why we are from different generations!

Here is a photo of John Stephen and his second wife and children, and one grandchild, including Ella and Floy.

Last year, in March, Gayle's Aunt Jozelle passed away and I was able to attend the funeral.  At that time, I met Gayle and several of her immediate family and several more cousins who were Jozelle's family.  Even though it was not a happy occasion, it was very nice to meet more of my family who descended from a common ancestor!

Also, last year, I was able to meet another cousin, Ann, who lives in Williamsburg, Virginia. We had meet several years earlier and shared information about our common families.  Anna and I are 5th cousins, sharing our 4th great grandparents, Henry and Ann Pitts, from South Carolina.  My family was planning a visit to Colonial Williamsburg and Ann and her husband Jim met us for lunch.  We had a wonderful visit and continue to share information.

About 8 years ago, I met another cousin, Linda, and found a whole branch of my family I knew nothing about.  Linda and I are 3rd cousins, once removed.  Our common ancestors are Henderson and Mary Ann "Polly" Dunaway Ferguson.  I am descended from their oldest son, James Ezekiel Ferguson and Linda is descended from their youngest son, Henderson Ferguson, Jr.  I wrote about this family in an earlier post and if you would like to, you can read more here

Linda and her husband invited me to come visit and stay with them and we shared photos, stories and got better acquainted.  It was a wonderful visit and she shared this photo of her grandfather, James Elmer Ferguson.

I continue to connect with people online through many different websites, and even through DNA, these days.  Sharing information and photos with them is always exciting, but my favorite thing is to be able to meet them in person.
